Loneliness and friendship quality in early adolescence: Analyzing bidirectional associations

•A concurrent negative association between loneliness and friendship quality was found.•No significant across-time associations between the two constructs were found using cross-lagged panel modeling.•Future research should approach this research question from different theoretical perspectives on loneliness and examine the research question with shorter time intervals between the measurement waves.
