•Soft-sensor virtual controller improved Yellowness Index (YI) control in a real-world industrial ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) resin compounding process.•Soft-sensor virtual controller built using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) models.•Soft-sensor virtual controller improved stability and grade changeovers.•Physical correctness of soft sensor checked through MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) and step tests.
