ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are ubiquitous membrane-bound proteins that are responsible for the translocation of a broad spectrum of substrates across cellular membranes,including lipids, amino acids, nucleosides,sugars, and xenobiotics. Interestingly, ABC transporters are highly expressed in the brain.
