59.3 Clinical Pearls in Working With Neurodiverse and Transgender/Gender-Diverse Youth
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry(2023)
Abstract
Studies suggest myriad health risks stemming from stressors and unmet care needs specific to ASD youth who are gender-diverse (GD). While clear clinical guidelines on ASD/GD mental health care are lacking, it is known that a specialized care approach is important in facilitating a safe space allowing youth to explore their identities and tackle important issues. Caring for the mental health needs of ASD/GD youth includes awareness of and sensitivity to the complex cultural needs emerging from intersecting diverse identities. This presentation reviews best-practice approaches to clinical care for youth who are both neurodiverse and GD.
