Abstract
•Differing ecophysiological responses between two sympatric Erica mammosa variants.•Fire, edaphic habitat and soil-moisture availability may be primary drivers of speciation.•Subspecific or specific status is warranted for the YS variant of Erica mammosa.•The CFR genus Erica probably has more species than currently enumerated.
