•Spartina invasion increased mudflat soil nitrogen by 38.5%.•Aquaculture reclamation of Spartina marshes decreased soil nitrogen by 16.4%.•Most of the change occurred in the non-acid-hydrolysable nitrogen fraction.•Large proportion of the acid-hydrolysable nitrogen remained unidentified.
