•FRP-confined SSC cores show effectiveness in enhancing RAC-filled steel tube columns.•RAC-filled steel tube columns with FRP-confined SSC cores show promising performance.•Effects of FRP-confined SSC core configurations and concrete strength were analyzed.•A reasonable load capacity model for the proposed columns was presented.•Seamless steel tubes could exploit compressive performance of the proposed columns.
