•A numerical study of a parabolic trough receiver with internal U-pipe was performed.•Simulation results were evaluated by finding correlations between key variables.•The highest negative correlation (-0.65) relates thermal efficiency to focal length.•The highest positive correlation (0.64) links thermal efficiency to temperature gap.
