Abstract
Veneer masonry walls are vulnerable to lateral forces such as seismic loads, and their failure has caused human casualties and property damage. This study developed a new anchor for existing veneer walls and evaluated its seismic performance using shaking table tests. The presence or absence of retrofit anchors, combination of anchors and steel strips, and anchor spacing were considered as the experimental variables. Out-of-plane excitation was applied to the specimens, and the magnitude of the seismic acceleration was calculated according to the required response spectrum defined in ICC-ES AC156. The experimental results showed that overturning occurred on the non-retrofitted veneer wall; however, the veneer wall reinforced using the proposed anchor exhibited no overturning. The peak ground acceleration, relative displacement, amplification coefficient, and shear force of the reinforced specimens decreased relative to those of the unreinforced specimens. Notably, the proposed method achieved a high seismic reinforcement performance even when the anchor spacing was set to 800 mm.
