•A N-doped/O-self-doped carbon material with superior PMS activation performance was fabricated.•A high TOC removal efficiency toward BPA could be achieved in NOPC-700/PMS system.•The synergistic effect of surface N/O functional groups significantly boosted the PMS activation efficiency of NOPC.•The main ROSs responsible for BPA degradation could be tuned by N doping.
