•N-doped CNTs loaded nano-FeOCl was synthesized by partial thermal decomposition.•NCNT loading significantly improves the degradation efficiency of IOH.•NCNTs facilitate Fe(III)/Fe(II) circulation by accelerating electron transfer.•The confinement structure enhances the availability of ROS.
