•A quantitative evaluation model of rockburst proneness for surrounding rocks is proposed.•The residual elastic energy is estimated by the geological strength index GSI and disturbance factor D.•The empirical theory and wave velocity methods are adopted to quantify GSI and D.•The excavation disturbance could reduce the rockburst proneness of surrounding rocks.•Multiple disturbances could further expand the low and medium rockburst proneness range.
