Abstract
This paper outlines how students in a science communication course, between 2020 and 2022, were able to learn from how COVID-19 was represented in the media. The pandemic provided a contemporary, highly relevant, and dynamic case study of science and risk communication techniques, allowing students to see how communication decisions could impact the public's understanding and willingness to accept the science. This paper provides lesson plans and strategies, as well as instructor reflections on how this prolonged case can be used to develop students' understanding of science communication practice.
