•Cortical mapping showed pars opercularis-related language symptoms.•Removal of the epileptogenic zone in the pars opercularis caused no language issues.•Shallow dissection below the pars opercularis caused phonological paraphasia.•The pars opercularis and cortices create a language network.•Damage to the pars opercularis is compensated by subcortical connections.
