Risk of depression and anxiety disorders according to long-term glycemic variability

•High glycemic variability was linked to a greater risk of depression and anxiety, irrespective of diabetes status.•Our findings were consistent across three glycemic variability indices including variability independent of the mean (VIM).•Trajectory analysis demonstrated that a persistently elevated fasting plasma glucose level was associated with an increased risk of depression.
