•Preoperative PNI is an independent prognostic factor in GC and EGJ cancer patients who underwent PG with DFT reconstruction.•For patients with preoperative PNI <45, preoperative nutritional intervention is needed for prognostic improvement.•For patients with preoperative PNI ≥45, postoperative nutritional maintenance is important for prognostic improvement.
