•A Ga(Ⅲ) adsorbent is obtained by in-suit imprinted technology.•The adsorbent possesses high recognitive selectivity and reproducibility for Ga(Ⅲ).•Selective Ga(Ⅲ) extraction from acid leaching of fly ash has been realized.•The adsorption mechanism of imprinted materials is revealed.
