•We estimated soil respiration using empirical and machine learning algorithms.•We calibrated algorithms with in-situ and satellite soil moisture and temperature.•Satellite-based soil respiration had comparable accuracy to ground-based estimates.•Algorithms that included soil moisture outperformed those driven solely by temperature.
