•The S-NiFe PBA@NiFe in situ grown on the NF expedites electron conduction.•The Mott-Schottky heterojunctions of S-NiFe PBA@NiFe promote electron transport.•S-NiFe PBA@NiFe/NF presents outstanding OER activity in 1 M KOH electrolyte.•S-NiFe PBA@NiFe possesses low overpotential of 196.7 mV and perfect durability.
