•The first result (766 ± 31.3 Ma) for in situ Rb-Sr dating of ore-stage sericite from the Daxiao Zn-Pb deposit.•The new genetic model, related to the breakup of Rodinia, is proposed for the Daxiao Zn-Pb deposit.•A significant polymetallic mineralization event occurred during Neoproterozoic in southwestern Yangtze block.
