Study on the crushing strength improvement of artificial aggregates made with 100% solid wastes using polyvinyl alcohol solution

•Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used to enhance the strength of artificial aggregates (AAs).•Mixing treatment could fill the pores and enhance the bonding between particles.•Coating treatment could bridge the aggregate matrix and fill the pores surrounding the surface.•Mixing treatment with a dosage of 0.5 wt% was recommended for strength improvement of AAs.
