•Ru(III) sites in solid micellar catalyst can be reversible switched to Ru0 clusters.•Ru(III) single-sites selectively catalyze the hydrogenation of functional groups.•Ru0 nanoclusters in contrast are very active for hydrogenating aromatic rings.
