A Blueprint for Future Electrical Engineering Education

Institutions for Electrical Engineering education are well aware that the quality of their efforts need permanent attention. This leads to regular program updates which recognize new insights. Still, a number of basic issues remain difficult to address and continue to affect the education adversely: (1) Electrical Engineering programs attract insufficient students; (2) university education generally suffers from insufficient practice opportunities; (3) the ambition to provide small-scale education is for most courses an impractical option; (4) employers regularly complain of graduates who lack skills, especially soft skills. This discussion paper analyzes these issues and offers thoughts on how to address them structurally. Though none of the individual issues and tentative solutions are new, an overall analysis is worth making and presenting, since it suggests an appealing general blue-print for educating Electrical Engineers in the future.
