A method for converting the existing mechanical zoom optical system to the focus tunable lens zoom optical system

•This article proposes a method to convert the existing conventional zoom system into a focus tunable lens (FTL) zoom system.•The necessary conditions for the equivalent substitution of optical components are derived, and an algorithm for building equivalent group elements is constructed.•An example is given in this article to demonstrate the specific conversion process of this method.
