Thermal design of composite cold plates by topology optimization

•A novel multi-material topology optimization method for composite cold plates is developed.•An optimization framework is presented for conjugate heat transfer with two solids and a fluid.•Four inlet and outlet combination models at different Reynolds numbers are explored.•The effectiveness of the optimization results is verified by numerical and experimental analysis.•Composite cold plates greatly enhance the performance especially in temperature uniformity.
