On-chip systems comprising a plasmonic THz antenna with an integrated electro-optical modulator are a very promising solution for both sensing and future high-speed wireless communication applications. To optimize the performance of these THz antennas, we present a modeling and simulation method. The model is capable of revealing the influence of the integrated modulator to the antenna parameters and its field enhancement capabilities, which are essential for electro-optical modulation. Ultimately, for a given modulator design we present a detailed antenna optimization approach that employs an accurate equivalent circuit model, eliminating the need for computationally expensive 3-D FEM antenna simulations.
