The endocrine system

The endocrine system includes a variety of hormones that are secreted by glands and circulate throughout the body to regulate metabolic processes. The endocrine system plays a role in the health and performance of all athletes, and this is particularly true in the growing and developing youth athlete. This chapter discusses the diagnosis and treatment of hypo- and hyperthyroidism, type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, exercise-induced hyponatremia, menstrual disorders and growth disorders, focusing on how these conditions can impact sports participation and performance in the young athlete.
