Abstract
Research breakthroughs have sparked interest for explorations of several food products employed in cancer prevention. Although various nutraceutical compounds from food items have been known for their therapeutic properties, the mechanisms of actions are not yet well defined. Various molecular targets have been identified that can be significantly used for cancer treatment and prevention. Since discovery, IL-1 has been implicated for progression and multiplication of cancer. During the last years, several clinical trials have provided evidence of IL-1 as a blocking agent in cancer. IL-1 is an important proinflammatory cytokine that majorly regulates the cascade of signaling pathways leading to attenuation of tumor growth and progression. IL-1 further exhibits antiinflammatory and tissue-protective properties, leading to prevention of cancer. However, molecular targets for IL-1 signaling and biologic impact are still unknown. Herein, we have described the active role of IL-1 in human health and cancer. Further, the evidence has accumulated depicting modulating abilities of several dietary bioactive compounds on signaling pathways targeting IL-1. In this chapter, we have also provided an overview of current knowledge of IL-1 cytokine as well as its integrative roles that will facilitate its applications in modulating approaches and helping us to understand this crucial cytokine in a meticulous manner.
