•The pollutant concentration of meteorological normalisation is more stable.•Gradient Boosting Regression outperforms Random Forest in terms of fitting regression.•The effects of different pollutants on mangrove forests are spatially heterogeneous.•There are inflection points between pollutants, mangroves and carbon stocks.
