摘要
The process of generating diverse cell types in the vertebrate retina requires the proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells resulting in an evolutionarily conserved tissue that is critical for capturing light and transmitting visual information to the brain. Our understanding of this process, termed retinal neurogenesis, has been significantly advanced by studies in fish. This chapter will highlight research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that enable neurogenesis to build retinal tissue during development, maintain the growth of the retina in early postembryonic life, and regenerate the damaged retina in adulthood.
