For the first time, the homologuegroup composition of chlorinatedparaffins (CPs) is elucidated in a historical series of commercialCPs used worldwide, highlighting the important challenges for theStockholm Convention implementation. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are widely produced chemicals,withcertain CP subgroups facing global restrictions due to their environmentaldispersion, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. To evaluatethe effectiveness of these international restrictions, we assessedthe homologue group contribution and the mass fraction of short-chainCPs (SCCPs: C-10-C-13), medium-chain CPs(MCCPs: C-14-C-17), and long-chain CPs(LCCPs: & GE;C-18) in 36 technical CP mixtures used worldwideover the last 50 years. Using low-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS),we quantified 74 CP homologue groups (C10Cl4-C20Cl10). Additionally, high-resolutionmass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS) screeningwas employed to identify unresolved CP contents, covering 375 CP homologuegroups (C6Cl4-C30Cl30).
