•Sol-gel Ni-based/γ-Al2O3 catalysts performance on toluene reforming.•Long-term catalytic experiments or under H2S and comparison with commercial Hifuel™ catalyst.•Low deactivation for sol-gel samples vs. high deactivation for Hifuel™.•Easy regeneration of sol-gel materials with unchanged properties and activity.•Sol-gel pure Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst very resistant to H2S poisoning.
