•Genes of serotonin receptor signaling pathway are predominantly hypomethylated in adults born during the Chinese Famine.•The famine associated hypomethylation pattern in genes of serotonin receptor signaling pathway is highly sex-dependent.•Both HTR2A and HTR2C are significantly hypomethylated in females born during the Chinese Famine.
