Is rib plating for a significant chest injury worthwhile?

HISTORY – 48year old female is in a motorbike crash at 90km/hour with a duck. She is thrown into a ditch landing on her left side. She suffers a left sided pneumothorax and rib fractures 2-9 and flail chest. She also has a left sided clavicle fracture. She has a chest tube placed and is on the ward with a morphine IV for patient-controlled analgesia and anti-inflammatories. Pain is initially poorly controlled but over the first 3 days it settles to a manageable level.
