Abstract
Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening mucocutaneous diseases. SJS/TEN are late type hypersensitivity reactions due to drugs. Anticonvulsants, sulfonamides, antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents and corticosteroids have been reported as responsible agents. The increased risk of hypersensitivity reactions associated with certain drugs is associated with specific HLA antigens. Epidermal separation is followed by the prodromal phase characterized by acute febrile disease and skin lesions. Its incidence is very low (0.4-1.2/million/year). SJS/TEN mortality is in the range of 5-30%. Short and long term morbidities are common. Treatment is multidisciplinary and includes transport to a special unit, supportive care, medical treatment, and psychological support.
