Abstract
Background: The diagnosis of cancer, its treatment and follow-up challenges patients between the ages of 15 and 39 years (adolescents and young adults, AYA) in a special way. Therefore, this age group differs from others in its support needs. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to present the needs of young patients affected by cancer that have been identified in the literature. In addition, the question of the extent to which these needs are taken into account by the existing care structures and which adjustments may seem reasonable will be examined. Materials and methods: To answer this question, a narrative review was created on the situation and needs of AYA diagnosed with cancer and on their satisfaction with existing care offers. Results: Many AYA patients with cancer report their desire for counseling and psychological support as well as information that takes into account their particular situation, e.g., fertility preservation measures. Support services that address these needs are sometimes lacking, sometimes not easily accessible and often not sufficiently interlinked. Conclusions: Overall, it seems sensible to provide low-threshold, multiprofessional offers that address the specific topics of young patients with cancer. A network between care structures aimed at children/adolescents vs. adult patients and those affected in the treatment vs. aftercare phase is essential.
