•Cx. pipiens mosquitoes have the potential to act as a vector of BEFV.•BEFV may has a temporary nature and short viremia in its vectors.•BEFV may be vertically transmitted from Cx. pipiens female to her female offspring.•Vertical transmission may compensate for short viremia and will ensure persistence.
