•Photosynthetic compounds were used as substrate for Geobacter Sulfurreducens bacteria.•Geobacter sulfurreducens can catalyze the transfer of electrons from root exudates.•The best bioelectrochemical performance occurred with the Juncus effusus macrophyte.
