Augmented Cognition Instructional Design for Studio-Based Learning.

Learning by Teaching is a pedagogical method in which students instruct others, gaining a deeper understanding of the material than they would from merely learning the content for themselves. Studio-Based Learning is a practice within Learning by Teaching that has pupils present their work to their peers and provide feedback on those artifacts shown. Although prior research has established that Studio-Based Learning produces many benefits for students, few studies have demonstrated consistent improvements in terms of student learning. This study examines how the modality of a course and the quality of participation in studio activities influence the effects of Studio-Based Learning on student academic outcomes, which inform best practices for future implementations of Studio-Based Learning. We also propose augmented cognition approaches for examining the efficacy of Studio-Based Learning.
