•Multiple high-risk HPV infection are frequent in SLE patients.•Duration of SLE disease increases the risk for hrHPV regardless of age.•Long lasting immunosuppression induced by treatment might impede HPV clearance.•Current cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination in SLE are unsatisfactory.
