A High Power Factor Rectifier With Excellent Performance Characteristics for Electric Vehicle Charging Applications

In this work, a high-performance single switch positive output bridgeless Cuk (SSPOBLC) high power factor rectifier (HPFR) is presented for the primary stage of the electric vehicles (EVs) on-board charging (OBC) system. Unlike existing bridgeless HPFRs, the presented SSPOBLC HPFR owns continuous current at AC mains, low RMS current stress on DC link capacitor, zero circulating current through antiparallel diode of switching device, zero capacitive coupling loop current, positive output voltage polarity, single gate drive circuitry, non-split DC link capacitor combination, and the possibility of magnetic components integration. With such excellent features, the presented SSPOBLC-HPFR does not require input side harmonic filters, incorporates reduced-size DC end capacitive filters, exhibits good electromagnetic compatibility, and has low switching and conduction losses. Even if the presented SSPOBLC-HPFR employs an additional inductive element compared to existing Cuk HPFRs, the possibility of magnetic components integration shrinks down its overall volume. Further, the auto power factor correction feature and buck-boost voltage gain capability of the presented HPFR incorporate the control simplicity and wide operational range characteristic at the primary stage of the OBC and, thus, enhances the simplicity and operational range capability of the OBC. Considering such advantages, the presented SSPOBLC HPFR is comprehensively analyzed, and its performance is experimentally validated under wide operating range conditions. Finally, the relevant results are presented for performance verification.
