Radiation characterizations of two isotopic neutron sources merging in one irradiator for experimental applications in the laboratory

•Two 214Am-9Be neutron sources have been merged in one irradiator.•MCNP was used to simulate the optimal requirements in the designed irradiator.•The recorded simulation and experimental radiation characterizations were in excellent agreement.•This designed irradiator can be used for lab purposes.
