•Fast and facile fabrication of a nanocomposite comprised of tungsten oxide and reduced graphene oxide.•The nanocomposite was combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes and exhibited high sensitivity for rutin detection.•The system demonstrated a broad linear range for precise rutin quantification.•The sensor showed selectivity and accuracy even in the presence of other organic compounds.•The research has potential applications in drug monitoring and pharmaceutical quality control.
