Ecosystem health assessment and comparison of natural and constructed wetlands in the arid zone of northwest China

•Total areas of the natural and constructed wetland tend to decrease during 2000–2019.•Urbanization and agriculture were causes of constructed wetland degradation.•Climate conditions and water resources were causes of natural wetland degradation.•The status of natural and constructed wetlands was gradually becoming healthier.
