•SIF and NIRv performed well in detecting GPP and canopy structure, respectively.•Canopy structure played a dominant role to link SIF and GPP.•∅F was more sensitive to precipitation anomaly than SIF and VI under drought.•Tropical deciduous forest was more vulnerable to the drought than evergreen forest.
