•Proteins derived from insects is currently permitted in fish, poultry and pig feeds.•Insects as livestock feed are more acceptable than insects as human food ingredient.•Heuristic cues and risk perception play an important role in consumer acceptance.•Familiarity with technology might reduce disgust feeling and neophobia reactions.•Labelling on feed ingredients reduces information asymmetry and improves acceptance.
