Young migrant men managing risk and seeking protection in a small town in Southern Uganda

•Newly migrant young men in Uganda continually face, and evaluate, a hierarchy of risks.•Health/wellbeing threatened by exploitative work practices, hunger, and risky sex.•Risks from sexual pleasure commonly exist in tension with the risks of poverty.•Services need to engage with the gendered lived experiences of being young migrants.
