•P. petiolosa possesses significant diuretic activities without any obvious toxicity.•The inhibitory activity of the Na-Cl cotransporter was possessed by methyl chlorogenate in P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching components.•The molecular simulations explain the stronger interactions between the methyl chlorogenate and Na-Cl cotransporter.
