•What is currently known?Nausea and vomiting are the primary complaints experienced by children postoperatively. Preoperative carbohydrate loading in adults have shown promising results in reducing postoperative discomfort.•What new information is contained in this article?In children, a carbohydrate load provides a more stable metabolic state at anaesthesia induction. However, adequate hydration might be sufficient to improve postoperative outcomes and reduce length of hospital stay.
