•α-MnO2 is uniformly dispersed on HPC through a facile, one-step hydrothermal procedure.•MnO2/HPC shows better conductivity, improved hydrophilicity, and higher specific capacitance.•MnO2/HPC electrode presents prominent desalination and softening performance.•Selectivity mechanism of divalent cation was elucidated using molecular modeling.
